Why is my Internet Slow?

Why is my Internet Slow?

  • Run a speed test. How fast is your internet? Speed Test
  • Limit device usage: If there are many devices on the network saturating the bandwidth, the speed will slow down. Other people that use the same network gaming or streaming.
  • Close unused tabs and apps: Having a lot of tabs and apps running at the same time is a huge strain on your device’s CPU and RAM. Therefore, slowing down performance.
  • Clear your browser history, cache, and cookies
  • Wireless interference: signals from microwaves and Bluetooth devices can cause interference (Microwaves use 2.45GhZ frequency and Bluetooth uses 2.4 GHZ frequency) The 2.4GHz Wi-fi band actually broadcasts between 2.412GHz and 2.472GHz, so there are times when the microwave and Bluetooth frequency can overlap with the Wi-Fi frequency. Try to stay on a 5G network if your ISP provides it.
  • Nearly every household has its own Wi-Fi network, which can create channel overlap. This can cause issues in a townhouse but is especially problematic in housing complexes and apartments with many routers nearby. Channel overlap is mostly an issue for routers that can only broadcast at 2.4GHz, or if you have devices that can only receive a 2.4GHz wireless signal. Use 5G if you can.
  • Internet Service Provider (ISP): ISP may have some downtime or bad connections. Using the internet during peak time (when everyone is on it) will cause congestion and will affect performance.
  • How far is your router? The further away from your router you get, the weaker the Wi-Fi Signal. Place your router as close to your devices as possible.
  • Router height and positioning does make a difference in speed. Leaving a router on the ground or behind something can decline performance. Put the router as high up as possible to extend the broadcasting range of the radio waves.
  • Reboot your router: Sometimes, the only thing needed is a simple reboot to help your router recalibrate and return to peak performance
  • Upgrade your internet plan: It may very well be that your internet speed is slow. If you haven’t changed your plan in years, you may want to increase your speed. With many people working from home now or using the internet more than they used to, it might be time to call your ISP for an upgrade to a faster service.
