How the School Counselor Can Help

Academic Support

The school counselor assists students with academic progress, goal setting, course planning, graduation requirements, attendance concerns, organization, and communication with teachers and families.

Social-Emotional Support

The school counselor provides brief, school-based assistance with peer relationships, conflict resolution, stress, school adjustment, decision-making, and other concerns affecting a student’s school experience.

School counseling is not a replacement for ongoing clinical therapy, medical treatment, or emergency services.

College and Career Readiness

Students may receive assistance with college and career exploration, postsecondary planning, college applications, financial-aid information, scholarships, résumé preparation, and career or technical education opportunities.

Getting Counseling Support

For Students

Students should contact the school counselor when they:

  • Need assistance with an academic or personal concern
  • Have questions about courses or graduation
  • Are experiencing conflict or difficulty adjusting to school
  • Need help planning for college, training, or a career
  • Are concerned about themselves or another student
  • Need help finding school or community support

Students may speak with the counselor before school, during lunch, between classes, or at another approved time.

For Parents and Guardians

Parents and guardians may contact the school counselor regarding academic planning, graduation requirements, changes affecting a student’s school experience, social-emotional concerns, college and career preparation, or available support resources.

Questions about a specific class, grade, or assignment should generally be directed to the classroom teacher first.

Privacy and Student Safety

The school counselor respects student privacy. Information may need to be shared with appropriate adults when there is a concern involving student safety, suspected abuse or neglect, or another circumstance requiring disclosure under law or school policy.

Need Immediate Help?

Website messages and nonemergency support requests should not be used when immediate assistance is needed.

During the school day, students should speak directly with the school counselor, a teacher, an administrator, the school nurse, the dean, or another trusted staff member.

If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

For suicidal crisis or emotional distress, call or text 988.
